My Fiesta Equestria Commission List is OPEN!

I'm going to be a guest at Fiesta Equestria. It's my first time at an MLP Show. Hopefully it won't be my last. Knowing that I'll be the only Pony artist at the show, I thought I'd post my rates and make commissions available ahead of time. I'll certainly be doing them at the show, but if you want to be sure to get one, it's safest to pre-order. Also, if you want something really complicated (The Mane Six playing poker a la Dogs Playing Poker) I can do the work in my studio and figure out an appropriate price. Also, I'll have sketchcards and copies of my books and trades. Maybe even a Love and Capes trade or too as well.

HeroesCon Auction Piece: The Shazam Family

I'll be at HeroesCon in a couple of weeks, and I try to participate in the art auction each year. I really liked the way my Doctors Who piececame out, and dug that longer format. I've also been reading the Lou Schimer Filmation book, so the World's Mightiest Mortal has been on my brain. I thought it'd be fun to do a long vertical piece of the Shazam Family flying. All the Family. So that meant the Lieutenants Marvel, Hoppy the Marvel Bunny and Uncle Dudley. And for good measure, you can see the wizard Shazam in the background, too.

It's my hope that one of these days, DC will give the Marvel Family the same digital treatment they have for Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman. I think Shazam has a lot of room for interpretation, and taking them outside the DC mainstream may be the best place for these characters of different world and sensibilities. I mean, there's a walking, talking tiger and people just accept it.

And yeah, I'd hope I got to work on it, too.

Anyway, to do this piece, I sketched out all the characters on tracing paper. I tried to give them unique poses, even though they're all doing basically the same thing. I stuck with the DC 70's versions of the characters, except I gave Mary the same swashbuckler boots everyone else has instead of the slippers she wore for a while.

And, as much as I like the idea, I did away with the jacket flap on Captain Marvel's uniform. I know it was from the original and I am kind of a fan of it but there's something about the simpler design that works better for me.

The original piece is 24" high on bristol, and the black and white, as well as a color giclee print, will be donated to the auction at HeroesCon. I might have a couple extra copies of the print at my table, too.

A Stormtrooper in Lederhosen

My art book is called Rhinos Bowling because I realized that what my world involved one day. Yesterday was Stormtroopers Wearing Lederhosen. I can't say what it's for yet, though once I can, rest assured that I will. For now, I leave you to wonder how they can drink beer through their helmets.

Remember I said that I was writing the fifth issue of My Little Pony: Friends Forever? Well, that's not all. I'll be doing one of the alternate covers for the issue, too. BEHOLD WITH YOUR EYES!

I'm Writing Ponies Again!

I'm writing issue #5 of My Little Pony: Friends Forever, which is kind of like Pony Brave and the Bold. My issue teams up Fluttershy and Zecora, which seemed like a great idea until I wrote my fourth page of rhyming dialogue. Still tons of fun. Here's the official solicitation:

Zecora Premium Commission

Here's the second of my runs at doing a premium commission: Zecora. I really like the way these watercolor pieces are coming.

Zecora's kind of a favorite of mine. It's probably the Z thing.

I'll be at Indiana Comic Con with a new print!

This year I'll be making my first trip to the Indiana Comic Con. I'm looking forward to it, both to experience a new show and to see some old friends. And, since it's a new place for me to visit, I've done another new con print. These things are expanding a bit, aren't they?

You know, I'd love to do a Sydney one. Hint hint.

New for 2014: Premium Commissions

I want to try some new things at my 2014 conventions. One of them is this: a new "premium" commission. I want to take a limited number of much more complicated pieces, colored in watercolor rather than marker. I'm only going to do a couple for each show, and you can either place an order or select out of the ones that I already have done.

To start, I'm trying some My Little Pony stuff. I draw the ponies a lot, but I haven't had much of an opportunity to play with the backgrounds and those are a lot of fun. Also, I haven't done watercolors in a long time, so it's nice to start refreshing that skill. Here's Twilight Sparkle as a premium commission. I've got a Zecora one on the drawing board that I'll be showing soon, too. Both of them will be available at Connooga next month.

If you're interested in getting one, give me a shout and let me know. I'll certainly do a few through the mail. For these, 9x12 in full color, one character in an environment, I'm going to charge $125.

Coming Soon: The Complete Love and Capes!

The news broke on Twitter last week, but I wanted to officially announce that there will be a Complete Love and Capes collection from IDW this summer. It's going to include all 24 issues of the series. The only new story page will be the one-page "Hostess" ad I did with Just Jenn (which is the only post-baby story so far). I'm going to put some rarely-seen things in the back matter, including the complete collection of Love and Capes con prints, art done by some comics pros that haven't been seen before, all the t-shirt designs and more.

ConNooga Exclusive Print!

In preparation for my appearance at ConNooga in Chattanooga, Tennessee next month (and my first show of the year!) I've done a con print for the show. It's Lookout Mountain, with Mark and Abby having their own look. As usual with these, these will be limited to 25 prints, and the original will be for sale, too.

I'm also looking at creating some limited edition, hand-colored Pony commissions that are a little more detailed and involved than my normal con sketches. We'll see how that goes.
