I'll Be Signing at Alter Ego Comics

This Saturday, December 7th, I'll be doing a signing/appearance at Alter Ego Comics in Lima, Ohio. for the Downtown Holiday Fest! You can support small businesses (Alter Ego and other downtown businesses), get 20% off your purchases at Marc's fine store, and I'll be signing and sketching… and teaching a My Little Pony drawing class at noon. I'll also have copies of the Love and Capes trades, my issue of MLP:Twilight Sparkle, and copies of the Pony Tales trade which features my story and six other awesome ones. My sketches will be $5.00, with the money going to the Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

You can read more about it on Marc's Alter Ego blog, and get a complete list of Downtown Holiday Fest participants here.

It's always a fun time at Marc's shop. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

Twinkie Ads for the Next Generation

This thing called Comic-Con is coming up, and I feel like I should have something new for it. I mean, it's not like the complete run of Love and Capes isn't enough, right? Not to mention the chance to meet me. But yeah, I think we need something new, too. Hokey Old Time Comic Book GoodnessSo, in conjunction with justJenn Recipes, whom you may remember as baking me some Twilight Sparkle cookies back when I helped launch the My Little Pony Micro-Series, we have created a Love and Capes print in the style of the old Hostess ads. Ads which are so awesome that they have been collected by Seanbaby into this fantastic web archive.

Today, all you get to see is this preview image. On Wednesday, head over to justJenn's site and see even more details. We'll both have them for sale at our booths at Comic-Con, so drop on by!

Free Comic Book Day 2013… Finally!

I've been promising to recap my Free Comic Book Day for a little while now, but the busyness of business got in my way. But, for a brief time, I'm caught up. Having gone into darkness on Twitter and Facebook so that when I go see Star Trek: Into Darkness tonight without being spoiled as to who Benedict Cumberbatch's character is (my money is on Keyzer Soze, though), I'm a little less distracted. This year I returned to Newark, Delaware for Joe Murray's Captain Blue Hen event. Joe runs a great event, and he met every rider on my contract of services. Thankfully, my contract of services is a lot less intense than Beyonce's. Mostly it's "I like Pepsi and take me to see Iron Man 3." I flew into Baltimore on Friday, drove up to Newark, and then set up at the shop. The next day was Free Comic Book Day, and there the fun began.

The difference between this year and every other is that now I'm a Pony Artist™. I wrote and drew an issue of My Little Pony and that changes everything. Since Free Comic Book Day is such a kid heavy event where they can pick up such kid-friendly titles as Spongebob Squarepants, NFL Rush Zone and The Walking Dead (wait, what?), I become a lot more interesting to those kids having worked on Pony.

So the coolest thing was drawing for the young kids, the kids whose faces light up with a quick head sketch of Rainbow Dash. A couple of them even drew pictures for me. It's just awesome. I have a great job on a bad day, and on a good day it's magical.

I also taught a drawing class over at the next door art center, too. I love that Joe is able to turn the event into an experience like that. It's not just free books, but a whole experience.

I also pre-drew a bunch of MLP sketch cards thanks to some sage counsel from Joe and his staff. That gave me a new saleable item and helped keep things hopping at my table.

Afterwards, we all went out to dinner. I got to hang out with the crew, and especially my friends Jamar Nicholas and Dan Parent. It's so great talking shop and business theory and life philosophy with them. Truly some of the best times!

I'm definitely looking forward to next year!

It's Valentine's Day! Win Love and Capes prizes!

It's Valentine's Day, and Comixology is running a sale on the digital versions of the entire Love and Capes catalog. If my math is right, you can get 24 (25 if you count the double-sized wedding issue as two) issues of my favorite superhero romantic comedy for $25.00! That's crazy.Valentine's Day Sale-- EVERY ISSUE HALF OFF!

To help promote this, I'm running a contest on Twitter and Facebook. Here's how it works:

On Twitter: Tweet (or retweet) this link to the Comixology page, http://bit.ly/lncvalsale with the hashtag #lncsale and just like that, you're entered. You don't even have to buy them, though I would appreciate it if you would.

May I suggest:

Valentine Sale! The entire Love & Capes catalog is on sale @comixology today only! http://bit.ly/lncvalsale #lncsale RT to win a t-shirt & art!

But anything with the link and the hashtag will be entered.

On Facebook: Like the Love and Capes page and like and/or share the link to the Comixology sale.

I'll pick one random winner from each service. You'll win:

  • One of the new Love and Capes t-shirts. If you already ordered one, your money will be refunded.
  • An original 9x12 one-character commission of your choice.

I'm blessed with some of the best fans in comics. Thanks for supporting the book, and I hope you have a great Valentine's Day.

Win this!

Love and Capes Comixology Sale is on the way!

IDW and Comixology have arranged for a pretty nice Valentine's Day present: ALL the issues of Love and Capes, my self-published issues (including the double-sized wedding issue), and both IDW series will be just 99¢ an issue on Valentine's Day. It'll be a one-day only sale. You can get the whole series for less than $25.00!

Don't worry, either. I'll remind you when it gets closer.

To answer a question I get often, there's no wrong way to buy Love and Capes. Digital, at your local comic shop, on Amazon, or from me in person at a comic convention… I see money on every transaction and sales get tracked. So do what's best for you.

Hey! The first six issues are already 99¢. Go ahead and get a head start.

Order a Love and Capes T-Shirt! LIMITED TIME ONLY!

You wanted a new Love and Capes t-shirt? You've got one!

For those of you who voted, this was option #2, far and away the winner. Thank you so much for your input! It'll be on a cardinal red 100% cotton Fruit of the Loom tagless shirt, with black and white printing on the front.

Yes! You can have a happy marriage in comics!

Here's the plan: This is going to be a Kickstarter type project. Shirts will be $10.00 + $5.00 shipping (there is an option to pick them up at a convention and save shipping costs, too). I need to sell 24 shirts to make this happen. At that number and price, that's what I need to cover the costs. If I don't make that quantity, I will refund everyone's money. I'm going to cap the orders at the end of the day, February 14th.

(Hey, that's Valentine's Day!)

My hope is that we exceed the 24 number and as the per unit wholesale price drops, I can get extra shirts made to have for sale at comic cons over the course of this year. The extra shirts will sell for $15.00 (plus shipping, if bought on the website).

What I'm also going to do is hand sign every preordered shirt with a permanent fabric marker.

So, spread the word! Order below!

Comic-Con, San Diego, and ME!

Hey, Comic-Con in San Diego is next Wednesday! And I'll be there at my usual haunt, Booth 2000 in the Independent Press Pavillion. I'll be set up alongside Ben Thompson of the awesomely-awesome Badass book series (which has even featured a piece or two by me). Together we're the LOVE and HATE tattooed on the knuckles of the hand of the convention. Or something like that.

I'm not doing any panels this year as far as I know, so if you want to hear me blather about Love and Capes, you'll have to come see me. You'll have to come down here, Khan!

Sorry, I thought I was William Shatner for a minute. That happens sometimes.

In addition to talking and chatting and posing for pictures, here's some stuff worth stopping by for:

Thursday, from about 9:30am-12:00pm the lovely and talented Amy Ratcliffe will be cosplaying as a female Crusader. This was inspired by a cover for Love and Capes: What To Expect #5… oh, wait, you haven't seen that yet, have you?

I'll be signing at the IDW booth, Thursday from 3:00pm-4:00pm.

I will have all-new copies of all three Love and Capes collections, including the so-hard-to-find third trade. There are some fixes that have been made in these new printings, including fixing the two pages that were flopped out of order in the second one.

Love and Capes: What to Expect #1

I will also have the first new issue of Love and Capes: What to Expect in glorious con-exclusive form! This cover features Mark and Abby figuring out baby names. You'll notice Abby's notepad has a blank area where I can write your name (or other name of choice) onto the cover. Since I drew it and lettered it, Abby and I do have the same handwriting.

Look! We're big in Japan!

And, thanks to Geekdom War over at booth B-04, I will have some brand-new Love and Capes t-shirts, including this Chibi style shirt that I'm thrilled to see actually produced! Be sure to stop by their booth and see their selection of Love and Capes and other shirts.

Rhinos Bowling!

I'll be debuting my Rhinos Bowling art book that was started by Kickstarter. If you're already a backer and are attending already, contact me and I'll have it at the booth ready for you. It's available in softcover ($25) and hardcover ($50) and in limited numbers here at the show.

Conevtnion Version

I'll also have some of of my San Diego Con Prints, showing Crusader and Darkblade enjoying some fine ribs at the Kansas City Barbecue.

As usual, I'll also be taking commissions, and feel free to e-mail me and be sure to get on the list! I'll be selling a lot of the pre-drawn con pieces that have been on my site this last month or two, too. And I'll be signing and posing for pictures and all that fun stuff as well.

Comic-Con is a huge show and a massive part of my career. I've often described it as not so much a sprint as a Battaan Death March. And while there's a lot of hurdles to the show, travel and shipping and printing and setup and forms and taxes and booth space, here's the thing: If the worst part of my professional year is the part where I have to spend a week in San Diego and talk and promote the work I'm proudest of and the thing I know without a doubt that I was put on this Earth to do, it's not so bad.

I mean, some people have to wear ties to work.

Vote for Me in the We Love Fine Star Wars T-Shirt Contest!

I'm a contestant in the WeLoveFine Star Wars t-shirt contest. Basically, participants were asked to make Star Wars themed t-shirts. I started with one design, figuring "I'll just try with this one." I wound up doing four designs, shown below. Click the image to be taken to the WeLoveFine site where you can sign in for an account and then vote whichever designs you like.

Please like mine.

You may have to click back here to get the direct link to my designs, but with a little effort, you can vote for mine. And then you can vote for some of the other two-hundred thirty. There's a lot of good stuff there, and a lot of stiff competition. I'd say that all I can do is try, but there is no try… there is only do.

Look, Zuckuss is standing like Del Toro!

Unusual Suspects

Yeah, I'm all about the classy

Jabba's Palace

No, I have a GOOD feeling about this one

Bad Feeling About This
