Devil May Care
Here's another recreation of a commission from Mid-Ohio-Con. Someone came up and wanted a "devil girl." No particular character, just something with that as a theme. That was pretty cool, to have that kind of free reign to create and design a character.
It required a fair amount of tracing paper to make it work, as there were a lot more overlapping shapes than I'm comfortable working out directly on a piece of bristol. I think it came out nicely, and looks even better colored.
Elektra. Woman.
I mentioned that I did a bunch of commissions at the recent Mid-Ohio-Con. I offer color commissions, but the deal is that I need to take the original home, or you need to send me a scan of the image. Well, a couple people have taken me up on that. One was George, who had me color this commission of Elektra from Daredevil.
This one came out nicely, and I think the color really makes it pop. So I now have my third piece for the next Powerful Women collection. Only Twenty-two left to go.
And I'll probably be posting more sketchesfrom MOC and Baltimore. Sometimes I start out working on tracing paper, and as such I have tracing paper versions that I can use to recreate the artwork. And, as long as I'm mentioning the Powerful Women collections, I should let you know that I have only a handful left, and don't plan on printing any more this year. So, if you want any before they get snapped up at WizardWorld Texas, order now.
Commishalicious
I did a boatload of commissions at Mid-Ohio-Con this weekend. According to my list, I did a couple of Power Girls, a couple of Supergirls, an Alfred E. Neuman, a Wesley/Fred/Ilyria, an Abby from Love and Capes, an Elektra, an Amazonia, a Devil Girl, and a caricature/wedding sign. Whew! That was a lot, and that doesn't include any quick head sketches or the inevitable things I forgot, too.
I took some photos of a couple on my wicked cool iPhone, and some are being sent to me so that I can color them and finish them up. I'll post them over the next couple weeks and show them off. Some of them came out particularly well, and they were all fun. In particular, I really liked this Devil Girl I did. It was fun having a generic theme, rather than a specific character, and playing in that world.
The other commission here is Power Girl, and she's always fun.
More Than One Way to Skin a Catwoman
One of my Baltimore commissions got posted yesterday. It's the first of many Catwoman pieces that I did over the weekend.
You can view it, and a bunch of other excellent drawings at the statueforum.com board.
Brave Brave Sir... er, Madam Robyn
A while back, Paul originated a sequel to the Robin Hood myth, Robyn of Sherwood, with Robin's daughter catching up with the gang fifteen years after the end of the original. I'm not doing it justice, but it was a great series. It's going to be coming back, remastered with all sorts of newness.
I inked the second issue of the original series back in the day. And I'm still connected with it, as I've created the new Robyn of Sherwood logo. Paul was pretty easy to work with, which is always nice when you're navigating that minefield of working with friends. The logo came out pretty well, too. Click on the logo to see it bigger, or click here to read more about Robyn of Sherwood.
The Castle Perilous
I wound up doing this commission for Castle Perilous in Illinois to help promote the upcoming Love and Capes trade and issue #8. Have I mentioned either of those lately? They're both coming out soon, and you should buy many of them.
Anyway, the shop requested it, and I was glad to help out. And, if you own a shop and one of these would help you order and move some more Love and Capes, give me a shout and maybe we can figure something out.
Do the Batdance
The second Powerful Women-type commission I received was this Batgirl/Harley Quinn piece. With this, Harley is starting to rival Poison Ivy as my most-requested comic book female.
This one came out really well. It's always a challenge to put two characters together, especially in a smaller image area (this one was done, as per request, on a special comic book backing board). The dark background works really well, too.
That's two down and 23 to go before I have enough for Powerful Women #3.
Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble
I'm not sure why, but I've had an surge in commissions the last week. So, let me take this opportunity to let everyone know that I will definitely be doing commissions at Baltimore Comicon, Mid-Ohio-Con, and Wizard World Dallas. And, as always, I take them through the site, too.
The one I'm posting today is an Tula and Mera sketch. When I got the request, the commissioner wrote "Mera and Tula aka Aquagirl." I responded back with "Please. I am quite aware that Tula is Aquagirl. (Best read in Comic Book Guy voice.) "
The result is my best Aquagirl sketch ever. As well as my first. Anyway, here it is. Click and embiggen if you so dare!
And, hey, remember that I've got two whole books of these commissions for sale, including the newest one, Powerful Women #2.
Picture This
I've been back from San Diego for almost two weeks now and I never posted those pictures I said I'd post. Things got busy upon my return, including some things I can't talk about yet. (Curses!) As soon as I can say something about these, I will.
Anyway, here are some photos from Comic-Con. With all these photos, you can click and embiggen.
There were some great costumes at Comic-Con. I loved this take on Plastic Man.
And there was a lot of Hollywood stuff around, including this, from "The Mummy 3."
I did some sketches at the show, as well as at the aforementioned Drink and Draw. The Moon Knight was a commission, the others were from the D&D.
That's all I've got for now. Hopefully more cool artwork from current projects soon!
SDCC 2008: T-minus One
Tomorrow the Con starts. Today, I did Not Much.
Bob and I drove Ingersoll the Younger to the airport and then headed down to San Diego. Well, Bob drove and I slept. But we were both in the car.
I hate Bob by the way. Why? Well, not only does he handle booking the hotel, not only does he get us a great rate, especially by Comic-Con standards, but then he books us a block from Ghiradelli!
I have few weaknesses. Coffee. Battlestar Galactica. Any female Joss Whedon casts in one of his projects. And above them all, chocolate. Especially Ghiradelli chocoolate. Specifically their peanut butter chocolate flavor, not that I stopped by the place on my way back to the hotel tonight. Heck, no.
I met up with Paul Merolle, he of the Toon Tumblers. And with his and Bob's help, I hauled all my stuff into the convention center. And then I went to dinner with Bill Williams, Mark Buckingham, and Brad No Last Name. Okay, I just didn't catch it. But I will tomorrow and I will post it then. Promise. Bill is the brains behind Lone Star Press, for whom I do a lot of work. It's always good to see him in person.
Then later we met up with Bill Willingham, who does a little book called Fables. You may have heard of it.
Anyway, the show is half a day away from starting, and yet I'm already having good dinners and great conversations. And more than a few Coronas.
Tomorrow's the last day I get to sleep in at all before the carnage begins, so I'm going to cut this now and get me some sleep. More tomorrow.
