The Difference... Timing!

Powerful Women
With just a couple days to spare, the second Powerful Women collection has arrived! I was blessed with some overruns, so I can send out the orders I've received before I leave, and still have the stock that I need to have. Yay, Jones Printing!

Don't forget, the special goes away on Sunday, so be sure to order yours before the prices go up.

Wheelin' and Dealin'

Powerful Women #2I just signed off on the proofs for Powerful Women #2, so it's time for some pre-San Diego specials!

Until July 20th (the day I leave for California) you can get the second sketchbook for $10.00 plus shipping. That's $5.00 off cover price. And, if you order both of them, you can save $10.00 and get the 2-pack for $20.00 plus shipping.

The newbook features Scarlett from G.I. Joe, Princess Leia, She Hulk, Jade, Halo, Poison Ivy, Princess Aura, and many, many more. Click here to be taken to the commission page, where you can order the sketchbooks. They'll ship out from San Diego after the show.

He'll save every one of us

There’s a universal constant: No matter what version of Flash Gordon there is, Princess Aura is always smokin’ hot.

AuraThis one is based upon those way-cool Filmation designs from their animated series. It was my first exposure to Flash Gordon, and one that stuck.
Heck, I even have a soft spot for that 1980 Sam Jones/Melody Anderson movie. With Ornella Muti bringing the sexy as Princess Aura.

Yeah, Dale was the one for Flash, but you could see why he was tempted, can’t you?

With this, I've got twenty-five new images for my second Powerful Women sketchbook. I think it's a great one to end on, too. As soon as they come back from the printer, I'll make it availble for order her on the blog and on the site. And, I'll have it in San Diego, of course.

Not the Video Game

Here's the second-last image for my second Powerful Women sketchbook.

Batman and the Outsiders was one of those series I knew about, but got on board too late. Fortunately, my cousin has been buying a lot of those HaloShowcase reprints and has been lending them to me when he's done. Now I'm reading the Batman and the Outsiders edition, which features some very solid Mike W. Barr (maybe my favorite Batman writer) stories and some nice Jim Aparo artwork. And lettering. The guy had skills.

People like Jim never get the credit they deserve. To paraphrase Isaac Newton, they were the giants whose shoulders the industry stands upon. Solid, reliable, and able to draw anything.

His original design for Halo’s costume shows that he still had chops after almost twenty years in the business. It’s basic swirly shape design was very graphic and very cool. I don’t know why, but it always reminded me of the shirt that Disney’s Captain Eo wore. Michael Jackson aside, that was a cool design, too.

Wonderfully Powerful

Wonder Woman and Power Girl

I did this Wonder Woman and Power Girl piece for a client who wanted it for his daughter's room. I think that's pretty cool. It's also the second time that I've drawn the Amazon Princess with someone (the first being this Wonder Woman/Wonder Girl image) but I've never done a commission of her, solo. This pic came out nicely, and there's some nice characterization between Diana and Karen.

Anyway, click, embiggen and all that.

In other news, Apple announced the new iPhone, releasing on July 11th. I think this may be the one that I get, even though it still doesn't have voice dialing. Why, Apple, why?

Widow's Pique

Black WidowI think I only bought one issue of Daredevil when I was a kid, but I know it had Black Widow on it. I don't like her earlier outfit, of her later black/gray outfit, but this one worked well. So it's the one I used.

Process-wise, I tried simplifying as much as I could. Cartoony basic shapes, just a little bit of airbrush (that I'm torn on if I like it or not) and just a graphic, sharp image. It's also one of the few sitting and profile shots I've done, so that was interesting, too.

By the way I've recounted, and I only have four spaces left in the new Powerful Women. I'll probably have to suspend commissions until after San Diego then, so I can continue to prepare for that juggernaut of a show and pound out some pages of Love and Capes before I go.

X'Hal!

I was a big fan of the Teen Titans, back in the Wolfman/Perez era. I came on board late, right around the time of The Judas Contract. But it was a different type of storytelling than what I was used to, and it was pretty darn fun.

StarfireIf you're going to do a book of beautiful, powerful women, you can't go wrong including Starfire. Heck, she probably should have been in the first one, but she was a little... I don't know, obvious. I'm making up for lost time with this one, though.

This one is a lot more airbrushed than a lot of images I've done recently. And I worked in (relatively) dead line, rather than my usual brushy style, to get a different look on this one. You've got to shake things up every once in a while to keep them fresh.

There are still six more spaces to get your commission done and be in the next Powerful Women collection, too!

Yo Joe!

I haven't posted a Powerful Women image in a while. By the way, I'm still accepting commissions, and if they get in soon, they could also appear in the second edition, which might even be out in time for San Diego depending on how things break.

So, the publisher of the Love and Capes trade, IDW, just got the G.I. Joe license, and that got in my head.Scarlett I was a big fan of the comic, and have said in many places that the legendary G.I. Joe #21, the silent issue, was one of the huge inspirations for Raider and a bunch of the secret-agent-action stuff that I did before Love and Capes. I've got crazy love for the characters (though not as crazy, or as fun, as the Comics Pants guys). That got me to thinking about the characters like Flash, who I dressed up as for Halloween one year, complete with a custom laser rifle made by my Dad, and Snake-Eyes, and Storm Shadow... and Scarlett.

She was the crossbow-weilding Joe, and I always thought she was cool, both visually and as a character. So I took a run at her for the next sketchbook. The texture of her bodysuit was done in Painter using the chalk brushes, and it came out almost exactly the way I had it in my head.

It's a Rave!

RavenI mentioned on Twitter that I did a Raven commission. My customer wanted the Teen Titans Go animated cartoon version. It's for his daughter. It was a lot of fun to play around in that style, and nice to do something cool for his daughter, too. I threw in an extra version of the digital print that says "DAUGHTER's ROOM!"

Well, it doesn't say "daughter" but his daughter's name, but you get the idea.

Gentle Reminder

I've mentioned before the Candlelighters Auction organized by Thomas of Say It Backwards. I've got a Supergirl piece up there, and there are still a couple of days left to bid on it. I'm even throwing in some cool Love and Capes swag as well. There are a lot of other auction items over there, too. It's great art for a great cause
