Men of Iron

Iron Man coverI do a couple covers a month for HGR Industrial Surplus. Each cover features photos of their employees in various cartoon situations. This month, their buyers get to pop into an Iron Man cover, to tie in with the new movie. (What? An Iron Man movie? Why haven't I seen this anywhere?)

This one was a lot of fun to do, especially getting to add a couple of the villains. I took some liberties with Iron Monger and War Machine, both of whom wear mostly black armor and wouldn't be as bright or colorful as is proper for this cover. It was cool getting to put in a MODOK and Cleveland's own Blacklash in the art.

I'm hoping to do a Batman one when Dark Knight comes out later this summer.

If I Can Make it There I Can Make It Anywhere

Just a reminder that I, and Bob Ingersoll, are now on our way to New York City for the New York Comic-Con. I really dig this show. It was very good to me last year and I was barely there in any official capacity. This year I'll be there at booth 2446. I'll be selling Love and Capes, Powerful Women, and doing commissions. And, of course, meetin' and greetin' my fans. If you're there, be sure to come on by.

And, if you're there, be sure to get your sweet Iron Man Toon Tumbler, designed by me!

Yes! It's the Love and Capes Trade!

I've been hinting at this for a while, but I can finally announce it now... the Love and Capes trade paperback.

Maerkle Press will be partnering with IDW, publishers of such fine stuff as Star Trek and Angel and Transformers, who will be publishing this collection of the first six issues of Love and Capes. The complete stories will be released, as well as a reprint of the "How a Page is Created" special from #4, and a six-page Love and Capes tradebehind the scenes sketchbook section. And there will be a brand-new introduction from Mark Waid, who's written some little things like Kingdom Come, Brave and the Bold and The Flash.

This has been a long time in coming, I know. I have to especially call-out Harlan Ellison (yes, that Harlan Ellison) who got this ball rolling. Chris Ryall, editor at IDW will be releasing an official press release soon, but I thought I'd mention it here, too.

Love and Capes: Do You Want To Know a Secret? will be coming out in November, just in time for Christmas. It's 168 pages, ISBN 978-1-60010-275-2. And, it will be solicited in both hardcover and softcover, so for those of you libraries that want to order a hardcover, you can (and please do). I'll link to the official press release as soon as I get it.

Maerkle Press will continue publishing the "floppy" issues of Love and Capes. Issue #7 will be the Free Comic Book Day issue, and I'm still lining up when issue #8 will come out. With issue #8, I'll be back on a regular publishing schedule for the second "season". I just had to make sure there was a FCBD issue, because it's such a great promotion, especially since I can now announce the trade. Yay!

Seven Days and other cancelled UPN shows

This time next week I'll be at the first day of the New York Comic-Con. I'll be there, taking commissions, selling Love and Capes #1-6 and Powerful Women sketchbooks. And seeing those way-cool Iron Man Toon Tumblers fly off the shelves. Man, that glass looks sweet if I do say so myself.

Hope to see you all there. And I'll be posting my full convention schedule for 2008 shortly.

It'll Be Here Before You Know It

Love and Capes #7

I received my advance copies of Love and Capes #7 from the printer today. I got both the Free Comic Book Day and the retail version (available in July). I am so looking forward to this FCBD. I didn't know what I was in for last year. This year I do, and I think it's gonna rock!

Lantern's Light

While I was in Orlando for MegaCon, I met a Green Lantern fan who wanted a sketch done. We wound up doing it through the mail for reasons which don't need exploring at this juncture. He asked which member of the GL Corps I wanted to draw and I gave him three choices: Arisa (I am Ganthetlooking for new pieces for the second sketchbook), Tomar-Re (the example I use for what cool action figures you can get now as opposed to when I was a kid) and a Guardian (the Guardians may have been modeled after Irwin Hasen, who taught me at Kubert). He chose the Guardian Ganthet, so I put this one together.

The customer wanted everything done on green paper, which is all kinds of appropriate for Green Lantern stuff, hence the emerald hue to the illo.

This Old Website

Wow, five years. I hadn't redesigned the main Thomz website in five years. In art terms, that's an eternity. So, I figured it was time to slap on a fresh coat of paint.

The first thing you might notice is that the site is much more blog-driven. I use the great WordPress engine to run my main weblog, and I've folded some of that in. So, when I post something on my blog that has to do with my caricature work, that post will appear on my caricature page on the main site, too. It'll serve to generate new content with very little work, and I'm all about that.

It also means that some of the pages have one generic post on them right now, but that will change soon. And I'm making this post appear in all the newer pages, too.

The portfolios have been changed around, too, so there's new content there. The calendar has been updated in all locations to go to my iCal page. So, if you're looking to book me for an event, you can find my schedule there. The phenomenally successful Commissions page has been linked to the main site, which it wasn't earlier. The Con Reports section, which hadn't been changed in four years, now grabs the blog feed as well.

Also gone is the little Thom Zahler cartoon from the main page. I didn't want him to overstay his welcome, but the main viewer on the home page is swappable, so maybe he, or some of his cartoon brothers, will reappear some time. The idea is to show a representation of what I do, but also have a plank I can swap out, maybe even make rotate again, so I can highlight a particular project or event on the main page. And, the shape of said plank lets me have a lot more freedom to do so. That's a little inside baseball, but I thought I'd share.

So, sit and stay a spell. Walk around these digital corridors and see what there is to see. And let me know how you like it.
